Rega Fono MM
The Fono MM MK5 phono stage has been designed to be effective, easy to use and above all, to reproduce music. The Fono MM MK5 uses a fully discrete, cascaded, complementary amplifier input stage, a configuration designed to optimise the performance of your moving magnet cartridge. Now housed in a brand new redesigned case to match the new Fono MC and Rega’s latest range of electronic components offering a modern look guaranteed to integrate in to any hi-fi system.
The perfect partner
The aesthetic design of the Fono MM was as important as the quality of its electrical capabilities, so it benefits from the same updated aluminium case as the Rega Neo and Fono MC amplifier, giving it a design which offers a familiar feel and moreover brings it in line with its illustrious bigger brothers. The RIAA equalization has been split into two stages to minimise interaction. Polyester capacitors have been used in the signal path and polypropylene capacitors are used in the RIAA equalization circuits.

Rega’s Fono MM brings fast, punchy dynamics and rock-solid rhythm to moving-magnet vinyl playback, combining taut bass, expressive detail and a cohesive tonal balance. What Hi-Fi? rates its musical involvement and value exceptionally highly, while the compact stage keeps noise respectably low when carefully positioned—an affordable analogue specialist with genuine momentum.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Pros
Fast, punchy and rhythmically assured presentation with taut, tuneful bass and strong dynamic drive.
Delivers good detail, textured vocals and a cohesive, musically involving tonal balance.
Exceptional affordable-MM value; performance is considered difficult to better at its level.
Compact, straightforward design with respectably low hum and noise when positioned carefully.
&
Cons
Moving-coil cartridges are not supported, and cartridge loading is not adjustable.
Soundstage is acceptable rather than notably spacious, while treble refinement could be sweeter.
Mk5 changes are largely cosmetic rather than a substantial sonic upgrade over the previous generation.
SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 88/100
The Fono MM Mk5 is praised for its fast, rhythmically sure and musically communicative presentation. It delivers good detail and low-end authority, though its soundstage is described as acceptable rather than especially spacious or expansive.
Transparency Noise Floor
86/100
What Hi-Fi? reports that hum and other noise are respectably low when the unit is positioned with some care. It also finds that the Fono retrieves a good amount of detail, even if it is not presented as the most pristine or ultra-revealing option.
Tonal Balance Musicality
90/100
The presentation is described as decently balanced tonally, with textured vocals carrying appropriate power and passion. The review particularly praises its cohesive, musical delivery and says it is as involving as heard from a phono stage at this level.
Dynamics
92/100
The Fono MM Mk5 is repeatedly characterized as fast, punchy and full of drive. It maintains solid rhythmic control, conveys hard-charging energy convincingly, and handles dramatic dynamic shifts with real enthusiasm.
Soundstage Imaging
82/100
The review considers the soundstage perfectly acceptable in a budget-system context. However, it specifically notes that the presentation is not among the most expansive or spacious.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Cartridge Compatibility
79/100
This is a dedicated moving-magnet design, with 41.4dB of gain that the review considers ample for any appropriately priced MM cartridge. It does not support moving-coil cartridges, and the supplied specifications show fixed 47kΩ/100pF loading rather than user-adjustable matching.
Build Quality
85/100
What Hi-Fi? finds the build and finish perfectly good for the price. The review does not provide more detailed commentary on internal construction, shielding, or long-term durability.
Value for Money
95/100
At its roughly £230 entry price, What Hi-Fi? says the performance is hard to better and calls it the phono stage to beat at this level on sound quality. That is especially strong praise in the affordable MM phono-stage market.
