Magico S2

United States flag
View at Magico

The design objective was ambitious: create the most compact three-way S Series loudspeaker ever, with a size-to-performance ratio never achieved before. We at Magico are proud to say: mission accomplished. The S2 is a three-way, four-driver loudspeaker engineered to punch way above its 132-pound weight in all areas of sonic performance.

The S2 is available in a generous selection of premium finishes: six Softec choices that are rich in color depth, smooth to the touch, and very durable; and six High Gloss finishes that are expertly polished to a lustrous shine with a clear top coat. The three-footer support system uses constrained-layer damping and premium materials for greatly enhanced sonic performance.

Enclosure

Magico is renowned for its no-holds-barred research-and-development projects and the S2’s was no different. A Polytec Laser Vibrometer was used to measure the vibration of the S2’s cabinet panels during development. This, along with the latest simulated 3D modeling, gave Magico the ability to address potential resonance early in the design process as opposed to using a band-aid approach afterward. The result is the S2’s compact-yet-refined cabinet, crafted entirely from extruded aluminum, a design that minimizes diffraction and maximizes strength.

Unique to the S2: the enclosure is built around the largest single-piece extrusion Magico has yet produced. A full-length vertical brace is integral to the S2’s extruded cabinet, yielding increased rigidity and stiffness, while also enabling optimal damping strategies. This advancement, along with Magico’s tried-and-true S Series enclosure technology, meant that engineers were able to verify that the S2 exceeded the target results set for it: the enclosure will not add coloration to your music.

Drivers

Like the S3 and S5 before it, the S2 benefits from the Gen 8 Nano-Tec driver cone, which consists of an aluminum-honeycomb core sandwiched by graphene-reinforced carbon-fiber skins. The result has pushed distortion lower than ever before. In addition to vastly improved cone construction, Magico has invested three years on a new generation of driver chassis. With the S2, Magico introduces the first 7” driver that uses this advancement. The S2’s midrange is 5” in diameter and is equipped with a generous 75mm voice coil. Bass in the S2 is provided by a pair of newly developed 7” woofers. Both midrange and woofers have Gen 8 Nano-Tec cones built into third-generationchassis. The S2 produces a crystal-clear midrange and accurate, undistorted low frequencies with a maximum SPL of 109dB at 55Hz measured at 1 meter. The S2’s sophisticated 28mm tweeter is based on the flagship M9’s, and uses a diamond-coated beryllium diaphragm. The S2’s upper frequencies—extending to a staggering 50kHz—are detailed yet subtle and reveal highs that are revelatory in information retrieval.

Elliptical Symmetry Crossover

The S2’s three-way Elliptical Symmetry Crossover (ESXO) is a topology of rare distinction. The crossover is implemented with an acoustical-target 24dB-slope using a Linkwitz-Riley filter. Maximum frequency and phase linearity is accomplished, while keeping intermodulation distortion to vanishing levels.

The S2 uses a full complement of state-of-the-art components from Mundorf of Germany, including M-Resist Ultra foil resistors, which deliver greater power handling, increased transparency, and more sonic liquidity than previous components. New is the copper foil paper coil, which improves the noise floor by reducing microphonic effects. The result of the S2’s ESXO crossover is superior coherence from the speaker’s four drive units.

Professional Reviews 90/100

Rating for S2

Sound Quality

Build Quality

89/100

Value for Money

85/100

The Magico S2 delivers exceptionally precise imaging, natural tonal balance and exhilarating full-range dynamics from a compact, rigid aluminum floorstander. The Absolute Sound found its continuous spatial layering, transparency and lifelike punch especially persuasive, while the four-driver design brings clear instrumental separation and low-distortion speed to demanding recordings.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"The S2 is among the best speakers I've heard at soundstaging."

— The Absolute Sound

Pros

Exceptional soundstaging with precise lateral and depth placement, plus unusually continuous spatial layering.

Even tonal balance and high transparency help instruments sound natural and distinctly separated.

Quick, convincing full-range dynamics with believable punch and drive.

&

Cons

Bass is solid into the low 40Hz region, but listeners seeking strong flat output in the low 30Hz range may want subwoofers.

Its transparency and imaging strengths benefit most from high-quality electronics and a treated listening room.

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 92/100

The available listening review finds the S2 unusually believable, transparent and naturally voiced, with an even tonal balance and convincing full-range punch. Its most emphatic strength is a deeply layered, precisely organized soundstage, while the low end is solid rather than truly subterranean.

Bass

90/100

The Absolute Sound heard solid bass into the low-40Hz region and found the speaker's punch and drive highly believable. Listeners seeking fully flat output into the low 30Hz range, especially for electronic music, may want more extension.

Mid

94/100

The Absolute Sound praises notably even octave-to-octave balance, saying it helps instruments sound correct rather than emphasizing particular overtones or registers. That tonal consistency contributes strongly to the reviewer's sense of naturalness and musical rightness.

Treble

88/100

The S2 is described overall as transparent and natural, with no reported glare or hardness. The reviewer does note a gentle downward tilt of roughly 0.5dB or less per octave from the midbass toward the low treble, suggesting a subtly restrained rather than aggressively forward top end.

Soundstage Imaging

96/100

The Absolute Sound places the S2 among the best speakers it has heard for soundstaging. It highlights precise left-to-right and front-to-back placement, plus unusually continuous layering that allows performers to occupy convincing positions throughout the stage.

Dynamics

94/100

The S2 is described as quick, highly dynamic and very low in dynamic distortion in the upper ranges. More importantly, the reviewer found its punch and drive believable across the frequency range rather than confined to the midband or treble.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

89/100

The supplied material points to a sophisticated four-driver crossover using premium Mundorf components, including foil resistors and a copper-foil paper coil intended to reduce microphonic effects. Reviewers say little directly about cabinet finish, resonance behavior, terminals, or long-term durability.

Value for Money

85/100

No asking price is supplied, and neither review directly compares the S2's value with similarly priced rivals. The Absolute Sound calls it an excellent speaker, but does not make a specific case for value or price competitiveness.
