Linn Next-generation Klimax DSM

The Absolute Sound heard outstanding liquidity, ease and naturalness, with none of the glare or edge often associated with digital playback. What Hi-Fi? similarly found a neutral, natural balance with crispness and refinement rather than harshness, while StereoNET praised the studied neutrality, powerful bass and natural treble. Reviewers repeatedly stress that the Linn serves musical intent and emotional communication rather than imposing a conspicuous character of its own.

Detail and spatial retrieval are major strengths. What Hi-Fi? stated that it had not heard an alternative that bettered the Linn's detail resolution or dynamic expression, while The Absolute Sound praised its crystalline clarity and ability to resolve very fine spatial cues deep in the stage. SoundStage Australia also heard markedly clearer percussion, backing vocals, attack and decay, with instruments remaining distinct within a convincing three-dimensional space.

The in-house Organik DAC is repeatedly praised for a low-artifact, highly composed digital presentation. The Absolute Sound found its freedom from grain, glare and digital edge defining, and The Ear reported excellent results from streaming and USB playback alike. What Hi-Fi? found that USB, coaxial and optical inputs retained a consistent character, although wireless Bluetooth and AirPlay understandably did not equal the quality of hardwired connections.

The Ear calls Linn's control app a benchmark for reliability and reports that the DSM worked beautifully as a streamer, USB DAC and preamplifier. Audiophilepure describes operation as an ergonomic marvel once setup is complete, praising the clear configurable display and the communicative illuminated dial. One reviewer remains unconvinced by the effectiveness of Space Optimisation, despite another finding that it substantially improved bass definition and room-mode control.

The Klimax DSM brings together Roon, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Tidal, Qobuz and other streaming services with Wi-Fi, copper Ethernet and optical-network capability. It is also a genuinely flexible preamplifier/DAC, providing USB, optical, BNC S/PDIF, balanced and RCA analogue inputs and outputs, Exakt Link, and HDMI/eARC facilities on the AV version. What Hi-Fi? notes that its analogue inputs are serviceable but less subtle and expressive than the digital inputs, and The Absolute Sound encountered limited clearance for certain aftermarket power cords.

The machined aluminium enclosure, substantial 16kg-plus chassis and meticulously finished controls receive emphatic praise. SoundStage Australia found it reassuringly solid and praised the precision-machined enclosure and exceptionally smooth glass control dial, while Audiophile Style called the unit robust and luxurious inside and out. Reviewers also highlight the careful internal partitioning and the fit and finish expected of a flagship component.

At roughly $39,000 for the AV and Music versions, the Klimax DSM is plainly an aspirational purchase. What Hi-Fi? acknowledges that its price will put it beyond most buyers, and Audiophilepure raises a reasonable concern about committing to a flagship platform that may later receive a costly upgrade. StereoNET nevertheless considers an Organik-equipped older Klimax DSM a compelling route to elite Linn streaming performance, reinforcing how strong the underlying technology remains even as the latest model commands a substantial premium.
